Not sure how many are familiar with Matt Hawkins who raced in both USAR and ARCA, but I wanted to post something about him here  He died in a shooting accident over the weekend.  Although we didn't know Matt well, we did see him get that amazing win at Lakeland in 2007 in his very first race.   He also won in his first ARCA race.  Very shocking to get the word about his death on Saturday.  He seemed like a very nice, serious young man and it's sad to lose him.   Cry

Lou has several articles about Matt on our other website:

Sad. As I get older and older, I am bothered more and more by the deaths of young folks. 21 seems so young to me now. Very sad.

Here is a detailed obituary of Matt Hawkins for those (including me) who were not familiar with him:

Although he did not seem to have a ride lined up at the time of his death, I have no doubt that Matt would have started a major-level NASCAR race at some point in his career had he lived.  He was that talented.

Godspeed, and pray for his parents and family.

Desmond,

Please don't make assumptions about Matt "not having a ride"...I'm pretty sure he would've been back in USAR this year driving for his long time team which was affilated with Mike Garvey...Just because it wasn't in NA$CAR doesn't mean he didn't have a ride for this season.

Cheryl, that's OK.  I just went by the article, which didn't mention a ride for the season.  As I said, I didn't know too much about Matt before he died.
