They're heading back up.

Daytona 500 early TV Ratings: Yesterday's 50th running of the Daytona 500 on Fox scored increased average audience, total audience and household ratings compared to a year ago, according to fast national figures released today by Nielsen Media Research. The 50th Daytona 500 earned a 10.2/20 household rating/share and averaged 17.8 million viewers, and both the rating and average audience are +1% better than a year ago (10.1/20, 17.5 million). It was also the second highest-rated and second most-watched 500 ever on Fox, trailing the 2005 race in both stats. 33.5 million Americans watched at least part of the Great American Race, a +2% improvement over 2007's 33.0 million. The Daytona 500 remains far and away the top-rated event in American motorsports. Yesterday's race more than doubled the rating of last year's Indianapolis 500 (+137% vs. 4.3/12). Fox's improved Daytona 500 rating completed a Speedweeks "triple play" as the Daytona 500 (+1%), Daytona Pole Qualifying (+4%), and Budweiser Shootout (+6%) all posted gains over the same events in 2007. This is the first time that all of Fox's Speedweeks programming has boasted a year-to-year increase.(Fox PR)(2-18-2008)

I am glad to see ratings increase. Hopefully it will continue throughout the year. I was shocked to see that the FOX qualifying show was up 4%. I mean its qualifying! But good deal anyways. Maybe FOX did enough publicity.

It doesn't surprise me that ratings were up for the 500.  I think lots of people were curious to see what the COT would do at daytona, and how Jr. would do with his new teammates.  It will be more interesting to see if they can maintain higher numbers as they hit the flatter tracks where those who have figured out the COT are more likely to dominate over others.

All that gloating over 1 %?  All the hype and the best they did was a 1 % increase over last year?  Somehow that doesn't seem much payoff for all the hype.

Network PR will spin anything to be a positive. None the less an increase is still an increase and I'm sure they'll all hoping it puts a halt on the ratings decrease of last season.

 Ratings should be up because attendence is expected to be down because of gas prices and the economic situation.

ratings were up only for the fact that it was a milestone number for the event, as was why the event was sold out, so everyone could say they were there for the 50th running of the daytona 500.

It was Daytona and the start of the season - I'd be real interested to see the numbers for the snorefest coming up this weekend.  Now if they were racing at Rockingham, it would be a different case entirely...

I am not impressed by a one-percent increase, but I'm sure NASCAR will take anything it can get at this point.  As Cheryl said, next week will tell the tale.  And I might add the rest of the season, too.
