I'd read something on Jayski about Earl Barben (sp?), the spotter for Jimmie Johnson leaving the team earlier this week.  Claire on XM had him on the phone yesterday as well (she was a busy woman).  He is leaving that position to take over as the crew chief for David Gilliland.  Quite a surprise!  He kept saying he wanted to "go back on the road."  I didn't quite get that part, unless it means the spotter doesn't show up at the track until race day.  I knew his name sounded familiar when they talked about him as Johnson's spotter.  Claire and he discussed how he was Rusty Wallace's spotter for many years, so that's why his name is familiar.

Sounds like RYR is spending some money to get a talented team together for his two drivers.  Let's hope it pays off with improved performance in 2007.

From spotter to crew chief.  That's an interesting transition. Roll Eyes
