Yes, there is now such a thing as a NASCAR fan club.

It wasn't enough for drivers and teams to honor their loyal fans.  Now, NASCAR itself is doing it.  (Then again, that's been the prevailing pattern the last few years--take all the money they can, in whatever way they can. )

Anyway, the Official NASCAR Members Club held its first annual national meeting at the convention center in Charlotte on Thursday night.  Patrick Brady, the club's chairman and chief executive officer, predicted that membership will reach three million in the next five years and that 10 million people will be enrolled in the RacePoints program, which converts purchases of NASCAR items into special merchandise.

Some of NASCAR's past champions, like Benny Parsons, Ned Jarrett, and Terry Labonte, attended the conference.

The Members' Club meeting also included awards to local chapter presidents and various NASCAR entities, including one I absolutely had to laugh at.

The California Speedway received an award for--get ready--leadership!     Exactly in what the speedway leads was not specified, but here are some clues:

--Maybe the speedway was honored for enticing "fans" to shop while another boring race was going on.
--Perhaps its definition of "leadership" is packing the house with celebrities who don't give a (Dale Jr.'s favorite word) about racing and who may think, like Jeanne Zelasko, that race cars have two engines.
--Maybe it was honored for being in such a pivotal "TV market" that it received Cup race dates that should belong to Rockingham and Darlington.  (And, oh, where's Chris Browning's award for making the best lemonade out of the most lemons, aka the Mother's Day race at "the lady in black"?)

I'm sorry, that whole Members "racket" just makes my blood boil!  You don't need NA$CAR sanctioning to have a racing group.  We've had one here in Maryland for over 10 years and never paid a cent to NA$CAR.

Yeah, like the fans are really getting anything for their money.
