I guess a few people are having problems getting the ARCA website to work. Guess I'm lucky because I have no problems. Here are the practice speeds for today for those who can't get there from here.... The column spacing is goobered up but hey, you're smart people and can figure it out :-)

I'm padding my post numbers so I can get another blue helmet....

Gerhart Goes at Daytona; Fastest in P1

DAYTONA BEACH FL (2-9-06) – Three-time Daytona ARCA 200 winner Bobby Gerhart is leaving no stones unturned in his quest for a record fourth Daytona victory. The Pennsylvania-based driver was quickest during the first practice session with a speed of 186.784 mph.

Gerhart tested heavily at both Daytona and Talladega in preparation for this year’s event. However, he is competing in a brand new car.

“We switched engines seven times in the shop, just to make sure we got it right,” said Gerhart. “I wouldn’t say my years are limited, but I do want to make them count.”

Gerhart’s teammate, GR Smith, was seventh fastest driving a no. 94 BGR Research Chevrolet.

RYR QUICK IN DRAFT
All three Robert Yates Racing entries were quick during the first practice session in preparation for Saturday’s Daytona ARCA 200, with Stephen Leicht in the no. 66 citi financial Ford, Matt McCall in the no. 55 citi financial Ford, and Justin Diercks in the no. 70 Foretravel Motorcoach Chevrolet ranking second, third and fourth quickest overall.

The trio also made the most laps of the session, with a combined 78 laps around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway tri-oval.

“Just to be able to race at Daytona, whether it be ARCA, Busch, anything, is incredible,” said Leicht. “Now that I’m here I want to pinch myself because I don’t believe I’m here. We had so much fun drafting in practice. We all kept waving at each other and pounding our fists up in the air because we were so excited.”

Much like Leicht, McCall stressed the importance of drafting during both the practice session and the race. “ARCA gives me the chance to get big track experience,” said McCall, referring to the fact that the ARCA RE/MAX Series regularly competes on a challenging combination of both short tracks and superspeedways. “I guess it’s a little more comforting to know you have two other teammates to draft with as well.”

Justin Diercks, who is driving this weekend for ML Motorsports in conjunction with RYR, noted the importance of having teammates at Daytona.

“The plan is to stick with my team mates, Matt McCall and Stephen Leicht,” said Diercks. “If the three of us work together all day we should be able to run up front most of the race.”

As part of a driver development program for Robert Yates Racing, Leicht and McCall will each be competing in 7-9 ARCA RE/MAX Series races in 2006, in addition to competing in the NASCAR Busch Series.

BLOUNT SHAKES DOWN CAR, ALLEN TO DRIVE
2002 ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie of the Year Chad Blount took several laps in the no. 75 Bob Schacht Motorsports Ford early during Thursday’s first practice session.

Blount, was shaking the car down for driver Willie Allen, who will attempt to qualify for the Daytona ARCA 200.

LUSK 5th QUICKEST IN PRACTICE
Damon Lusk rounded out the top-five fastest cars in the first practice session Thursday morning with a speed of 184.509 mph. Lusk, a veteran of both the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the NASCAR Busch Series, finished fifth at Daytona in 2002.

“This is the fastest car I have driven here,” said Lusk, who has competed at Daytona several times in both ARCA and Busch cars.

ARCA DRIVER UPDATE
ARCA driver Amanda Gogel was transported by ambulance to Halifax Medical Center following an on-track incident during the first practice session Thursday morning at Daytona International Speedway. Gogel, of Port Orange, Florida was able to exit her no 01 Thunder Motorsports Chevrolet under her own power following the incident. After being examined at the infield care center, Gogel was transported for further evaluation and examined, where she was released at approximately 12:30 pm.

VENTURINI’S MECHANICAL WOES
During the first practice session Thursday, Billy Venturini made twelve laps in his no. 25 Central Merchant Services Chevrolet before engine failure cut his practice session short early. The crew is currently in the process of changing motors so that Venturini can compete in the Daytona ARCA 200 as scheduled.

BRANNEN SIXTH FASTEST
Walt Brannen, driver of the #65 SPS Georgia Peanuts Dodge, posted the 6th fastest time after this morning’s first practice. With a time of 48.786 sec at 184.47 mph, the Brack Maggard Racing (BMR) team chose to use the first practice for mock qualifying runs. With only minor adjustments made to the car, the team is satisfied with the results.

“This morning we strictly wanted to make qualifying runs and use this as a mini test since we were unable to make the test in December,” Said Brannen. “The car is very fast right now and feels really stable underneath me. Our team has got really high hopes for Saturday and our hard winter work is really showing. The goal now is to maintain top ten qualifying speeds and make it through happy hour.”

The team is planning on taking the second practice session today to continue qualifying runs, but with the amount of cars on the track, the laps will be limited.

In all, 62 cars logged practice times around the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

Brandon Knupp-car #96- and Ryan Howard--59- are currently 45th and 46th on the practice speed list. Both are from towns in Miami County, one county north of my place.
Then 54th on the list is Todd Bowsher from Springfield, 1 county east of here. The Bowsher family has been involved in racing for as long as I can remember. Jack Bowsher may have run a few Nascar races in the past. I'm not sure about that. Anyhow, I'd like to see them run well.

_____________________________________________________
DAYTONA BEACH FL (2-9-06) - Seven-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel and crew, sporting their new Pork colors, turned up the wick in the final practice session here Thursday at Daytona Int'l Speedway. Kimmel, in the draft with a tandem of Robert Yates Racing entries, posted a top speed of 185.739 mph over RYR development drivers' Stephen Leicht and Matt McCall. Walt Brannen, in Brack Maggard's SPS Dodge, was fourth quickest over Damon Lusk, Matt Hagans, Mario Gosselin, Erin Crocker, Greg Barnhart and Justin Diercks.

Rookie McCall recognized the advantages of drafting with the multi-time ARCA champ:

"To get to go out there with someone with so much experience and ARCA championships is great,” said McCall. “It gives me that much more experience and it’s good to be able to follow him around the turns at Daytona.”

Besides posting the fastest practice times, Kimmel also completed the most laps during his practice session with 40 laps around the 2.5-mile tri-oval.

ENGINE CHANGES FOR SOME…
Two ARCA RE/MAX Series teams decided to go to work in the garage area after the second of two practice sessions scheduled for the ARCA RE/MAX Series on Thursday. Both the no. 38 Bert Oostlander Chevrolet driven by Mike Harmon and the no. 7 Toyota of Escondido-Red Line Oil Chevrolet driven by Andrew Meyers will receive different engines in time for Pork Pole Qualifying, slated for 11:00 am Friday morning.

“Nothing happened to the engine, said Jeff Collins, an engine specialist that works with the team fielding Meyer’s car this weekend. “We’re changing it to see if we can pick it up a bit.”

Meyers is serving as a teammate to three-time and defending ARCA Daytona 200 race winner Bobby Gerhart this weekend.

HAGANS FAST...
Matt Hagans, in the no. 9 Eagle Creek Aviation-1st Wing Aircraft Mgt Dodge, posted the sixth-quickest speeds during the final practice session Thursday afternoon.

“We only did one qualifying run towards the end of the day,” said Hagans. “I have no idea which teams focused on qualifying and which teams focused on drafting and race setup. The Yates cars will probably be good, the Crocker girl will probably be good, Gerhart will probably be good. I think we’ll be somewhere between fourth and sixth in qualifying.”

Hagans finished fifth in the 2005 edition of the Daytona ARCA 200.

Sorry, I know it's rude to reply to your own message, but I just wanted to point out that Matt McCall goes from late models to top 4 in the Roush Gong Show to top 5 in an ARCA Daytona event. Pretty steep "driver development" curve eh?

Woo hoo, my "boy", Stephen Leicht, is kicking some serious butt down there! After meeting him and watching him race go-karts at the Indoor track I work at, I must say I'm a fan! He was totally laid back and not cocky at all. If one of his crew guys hadn't told me who he was, I would have never known.

Go Stephen!

I think it's neat to see several of us have guys we are rooting for in ARCA this week.  I'd like to see McCall do well as well as Danny O'Quinn (even though he's already secured a Busch ride with Roush).

If ARCA can avoid their typical scarey wrecks tomorrow night, I think that will be a lot more interesting race to watch than the Bud Shootout.
