From Jayski:

Ford steps down as Jarrett's crew chief: Robert Yates Racing (RYR) announced that Mike Ford has elected to step down as crew chief for the #88 UPS/Robert Yates Racing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series team and driver Dale Jarrett. Ford joined RYR in November 2003. “Mike made this decision based on what was in the best interest for himself and for his family,” said Eddie D’Hondt, general manager for RYR. “We obviously wish him the best in his future endeavors. We are actively pursuing someone to replace him,” D’Hondt continued. “Until we find the right individual for the job, we will fill the role in-house on an interim basis.”(RYR PR)(5-16-2005)

I wonder what the real story is.  Did Ford quit because he knew he would be fired?  After all, Jarrett is 15th in points, just a few points ahead of the 400-point cutoff, while teammate Elliott Sadler is fourth.

Also, wouldn't it be wild if Brad Parrott (crew chief of the #60 Busch team, and brother of Sadler's crew chief, Todd Parrott) was selected to be Jarrett's crew chief in the ex-Winston this Saturday night?

Seriously, the long-term risk is tremendous.  Didn't Yates learn anything from Joe Gibbs' firing of Michael "Fatback" McSwain last year?  Bobby Labonte was, I think, ninth in points at the time; he has not been the same driver since.

The new interim crew chief is Bill Wilburn.  He is formerly of the Rusty Wallace team, and began this year in the Craftsman Truck Series with Brendan Gaughan.
