It seems like just yesterday.

Adam Petty, fourth generation driver, killed at Loudon, NH during Busch Series practice.  It was five years ago today.

Forget the current "young guns."  Adam, who was still a teenager, could have been the best of all.  Certainly, he would have been the most popular.

Imagine: Adam vs. Dale Jr. vs. Jeff Gordon, week after week after week.  The whole history, seemingly, of the sport on the same track at the same time.

Imagine: Adam driving the Dodges into victory lane and bringing the Petty name back to prominence.

No one at Petty Enterprises will use his death as an excuse for the struggles on the track in the years since.  But the fact remains that Adam was the future of their race team, both on and off the track.

At least we have the Victory Junction Gang Camp; his idea lives on, thanks to the family and their connections with Paul Newman.

I now start the silent thread to remember who Adam was and who he might have become.
