Title: Fox on the Weasel Cam
Post by: Cheryl on February 26, 2009, 01:49:15 PM
I just heard the tailend of an interview on Claire B. Lang's show with someone from Fox (can't remember the last name, but it was "Lou" somebody).  Claire pointed out that a lot of fans had been complaining about the weasel cam being used so much at Daytona and how Fox had cut back a bit for CA.  The Fox guy had the nerve to go on and on about "how well it has been received" and "how many people love it."  He said they even have a guy dressed up in a suit at the track and "all the kids love it."  So it seems Fox is really into recruiting viewers under the age of 10 lately.  Just can't believe they don't realize how many loyal fans they are alienating with this stuff!

Claire was asking him about how they measure ratings and if they can tell if people change the channel when the weasel cam comes on.  He said they couldn't tell that, but they could track if they turned the channel during the cartoon in the pre-race show.  I haven't seen that and probably won't ever watch another pre-race show on Fox again.  I'd pretty much stopped watching them last year - can't take all the superfluous BS with Myers, DW, et al as it was, let alone them turning it into Sat morning cartoons.  But my point is if they guy brought tracking channel changes for that, they obviously realize that a lot of folks don't like it.  They're just putting on a good face claiming everyone "loves" it...

I believe it was Lou D'Emilio (sp?)  He is the only spokesman that Fox Sports has had since it was established in 1994.  Interestingly, D'Emilio is based in New York City while the rest of the network is in Los Angeles.

Yes, that's who it was.  Thanks, Desmond!

Edit:  Excellent article from Kurt Smith at Frontstretch.com about how all the bells and whistles aren't necessary:

but with all the FOX reality shows, they need to make it across the board. like one article i read yesterday pointed out, if they think this thing is so big, do you think the NFL and MLB will let them pull this crap?

They already have, take FOX's MLB coverage:

Scooter, a cartoony 3-D animated talking baseball (voiced by Tom Kenny) that occasionally appears to explain pitch types and mechanics, purportedly for younger viewers -- approximately the 10- to 12-year-olds.

There are also animated robots that appear on the NFL coverage and back in the day on FOX's NHL coverage.

I don't watch baseball anymore, so I didn't know about that, but that stupid robot thingy has annoyed me on the football coverage the last several years.

For the record, his name is Cleatus.

Also, I did not see Scooter this season, so FOX may have "cut him from the team."

Here's a new article about how Fox is turning racing into a Saturday morning cartoon.  Please check it out and cast your vote on whether Digger should go or not:

I know voting means nothing to Fox, but maybe they'll at least look at this poll and reconsider... ::)
