Title: "Improved" Crapshoot?
Post by: sally on June 29, 2006, 05:40:15 PM
According the That's Racing.com, Baby brian is ready to 'review' the format for the crapshoot...specifically, the 440 point/top 10 formula.  I guess he's been made to look more than slightly foolish with his predictions of having as many as 15 or 20 drivers 'eligible' for the crapshoot.  He is more than willing to fudge any numbers necessary to make it appear ...close?
That's a lot more crap.

The whole thing is a bunch of crap and always has been.  I guess we shouldn't be surprised that he's going to change the rules mid-season.   :?

Edit:  Heard some of the sound bites from his press conference on XM today and apparently the "adjustments" will be for the 2007 season.  Coincidentally when the new networks come in and the manufacturer.  Gotta make it "more exciting" for TV and probably to ensure a Toy car team makes it.

I doubt if he will make significant changes though.  I think they need to adjust the points they start with and then award more or none depending on where someone finishes.  It is still my opinion that they eleminate too many good drivers from the top ten when they do the shootout.  It bothers me big time to have my driver on the verge of the top ten and then can't advance no more than to 11th.  That has always been my big complaint.  So many drivers that are in 11th - 18th could have made the top 10 if they had been given the chance.  Again, this is just my opinion.

I'm with you, Vivian.  as long a all 43 teams are allowed to participate in the crapshoot, they schould have the opportunity to advance/fall out of the top 10.  If it was a REAL playoff with only the top 10 competing, then you can find some small justification for the wasy things are.  If EVERYBODY races, then EVERYBODY should have the right to advance or fall until they are all done racing.  My opinion.

Let me remind you how screwy the system is.  The 10th-place driver at the time of the cutoff can finish last every week but still finishes 10th, and the 11th-place driver can win every race and still finishes 11th.  A Chase driver doesn't even have to finish the season.  This happened last year with Kurt Busch.

This will not change no matter how big the field is.

Isn't it pathetic then a discussion of 'excitement' in stock car racing by it's governing body is about how to manipulate the point system, not about the action on the track?

Yes, truly pathetic...

Edit:  Here's a real interesting article by Mark Decotis of Florida Today about the changes coming next season.  His most telling comment has to be:

"Whether the fan base, arguably estimated at 75 million, will embrace the changes remains to be seen. But NASCAR has reached the point where, honestly, it doesn't really matter."

How true!  They've proven over the last 3 seasons that they don't really care about the fans.  It's all about TV and the $$$$$.   :smt078

AMEN to all of the above sentiments.!!! :x  AND, just to make it worse, the TV coverage keeps going downhill in a handbasket, as the saying goes.
All of which leaves me wondering just why it is that I still care about it at all,.... :(

I taped practice yesterday and they discussed it in the booth.  Even to the point of saying it may come to throwing out a couple of race finishes during the year.  Now that blew my mind.  Not sure what they are thinking but I am sure the rumors are going to run rampant with speculation until an announcement is made.

The same thing hit me when I read the article, Cheryl.  It's been a LONG time since Nascar cared what the fans thought...all 75 million of us?  Dropping the 2 worst finishes was something that Baby brian mentioned.  Ugh.

I think Monet Dutton agrees with us.

Thanks for the link, Sally!  Monte is always the voice of reason!  He certainly got this part right:

'This is the Age of Socialized Racing, and this sport is going to be competitive whether it wants to or not."

The socialism started with the charity pass back in 2003...

you know how much I love the chas.....right.  You know, I don't everm remember being so hung up on who won the championship...it was always sort of an afterthought, the outcome of someone having a great season.  I don't know how Nascar (Brian the Lame Brain) decided that the championship had to be more important than the rest of the season.  Maybe when they started building all those flat tracks where the races were doomed to be boring?  With the dull races making up so much of the season, and too many 'fast' tracks that aren't conducive to close competition, I am not impressed when someone gets lucky for the final 10 races.

"Baby Brian?"  "Brian the Lame Brain?"  Wow!

I just hope Sally is never in the same room as Brian France and a sharp object! :D  :D

Here is another thought for you to chew on:
Right now, Jeff Burton is looking good for making the chase. He has not won a race for quite a few years. He COULD, in theory, win the Chase sans winning a race!!! Would that blow Baby Brian's mind or what!! :-D
Frankly, Jeff has always been one of my Favorites, and I hope he does it. Then watch the fur fly. :-D

Let's just say that, if this were to happen, the 2007 Chase would resemble the all-star race.
