Title: Is Split Screen Possible?
Post by: jw on December 10, 2005, 03:44:17 AM
Yahoo's Bob Margolis, in his column "observations", reports that it maybe possible for ABC/ESPN to do split screen commerical breaks.  ABC/ESPN did have split screen commerical breaks for the 2005 IRL season, except
for the Indianapolis 500.  ABC/ESPN maybe able to convince their advertisers to go along with the idea.

Wouldn't that be delightful?  They might be able to put pressure on the other networks to do the same thing.  :-D

I don't know why split screen would not be possible.  In fact, they split it now only for different things.  Most of them very annoying different things.

In the Charlotte Observer, David Poole disagrees with Margolis on the use of split screen.  He cites two reasons:

--The amount of money ESPN and ABC will charge for commercials will lead to an insistence that the advertisers will use the entire screen.
--The Indy Racing League buys airtime on ESPN and ABC (for all races except the Indianapolis 500), then makes its money back by selling ads.  On the other hand, the TV networks pay NASCAR a rights fee.
